How to Select a Camera

How to Select a Camera
Due to the advanced technological nature of the Security Systems industry, it may be difficult to review all of the specifications of each camera to find the system best suited to match your needs. This is why we have created this How to Select a Camera page to help you navigate through all of the information and translate the technological terminology into more useful information. We suggest you read the following questions and answers outlined below, to assist you in selecting the camera that is most relevant to your situation.

Assess the Amount of Lighting Available Determine whether the area in which your camera will operate has dim lighting or is well lit. Black and white cameras generally require less lighting than their color counterparts. If you will be using your camera outside, during the evening and you have no outside lighting, a black and white camera will produce higher quality pictures than a color camera. The lower the lux, the less lighting a camera needs to operate efficiently. A camera with 0.1 lux will only be able to see in a well-lit area but a camera with 0.05 lux will not require as much lighting and in the evening hours will still be able to reproduce quality images.

Understanding Picture Quality When reviewing picture quality, remember to pick a camera with higher resolution. 350 to 480 horizontal lines of resolution will provide a very good quality image. As the number of lines decrease from 350, the quality will begin to deteriorate. In addition, a wired camera may produce a more stable picture than a wireless camera due to the direct feed.

Decide Whether Aesthetics are a Priority If it is important for your camera to present itself nicely, dome cameras are a popular choice. Widely used in the retail industry, dome cameras offer a neatly packaged and well-concealed camera that can be difficult to spot. You could also choose a hidden camera embedded into an ordinary object for complete coverage.

Determine the Level of Secrecy If you need to have a camera that no one will be able to identify, we offer a full line of Hidden Cameras. A wireless hidden camera will provide the best-concealed system and will be easy to move around from place to place. A dome camera will also provide some camouflage for your camera and make it difficult for people to determine which direction the lens is pointing.

Determine if Price is a Consideration When considering price, a black and white camera is usually less expensive than a color camera and a wired camera is generally less expensive than a wireless camera. Then, obviously, the more sophisticated cameras used for commercial purposes will be more expensive than cameras utilized in a home environment.
